Bonnie Hamre: About Me!

What's my major passion?

book Books!!

I fell in love with the written word when I learned the alphabet, and that obsession will never cease. I hope.

My writing career began at age nine with an adventure novel set in the Civil War , continued through high school, (lapsed a bit when I went to a coed university) and now I'm published in contemporary women's fiction and historical romance.   I'm fascinated with the Regency period (1811-1820) when the Prince of Wales was Regent for his father, George III, until he became George IV in his own right.   See my reference page for more informtion.  I'm also interested in the Civil War, and the years before it, particularly the beautiful, sleek clipper ships and the emigration West .  I'd love to tell you that my time travel set on the California Trail is sold, but...

I can, I can! PROMISES ON THE WIND is a December 1998 release from Hard Shell Word Factory! Please see my Book Page for details.

I joined Romance Writers of America in 1988, and have been active at both the chapter and the national levels ever since.

trees I have other interests besides writing, of course: family, roses, oceans, travel and redwoods.

Born in Ecuador to American parents (my Dad is a mining engineer).   I was raised and educated in Chile .  I grew up speaking Spanglish.  In my teens, I came to the US for high school.  Talk about culture shock! Until I graduated from college with a combination degree in Latin American Studies and History, I commuted to Chile on summer vacations.

Naturally, I intended to pursue a career, something to do with my degree, but Cupid interfered. I married a semiconductor engineer and after our daughter Marta was born, his job took us to Italy where our son John arrived.  Imagine the only blond baby with very little hair in a nursery filled with black haired bambinos.  Next, we moved to Scotland where I re-connected with my roots.  From our house, we could see Ben Lomond to the east and Ben Nevis to the north. This was satisfying, since Ben Nevis is in Cameron Country, and I am descended from Clan Cameron and Clan Stewart of Appin.

Just as the weather warmed, off we went to England, where we lived on an island near Portsmouth.  I could have lived there forever -- good friends, the Channel, touring, winemaking, gardening, socializing, sigh.

I wish I'd known that I would one day be writing historical romance. All that research I missed!  And though I've yet to visit Ireland , I haven't forgotten I had a grandmother named Mulcahey.

Two months before our son James was born, we returned to the US and eventually settled in the San Francisco Bay Area .

Now I live in Santa Cruz county, and guess what -- I love it here, too! Would you like a Pictorial Tour?

I began climbing the Information Technology ladder in Silicon Valley, and turned to writing again for stress relief, trying my hand at mysteries, which I'd enjoyed since I discovered Nancy Drew, novels with a Latin American location, and finally began writing romantic fiction.

The day I resigned from the corporate world to write full-time was scary but wonderful!

Now that my children are grown, I should have time to write, right? In 1996 my husband and I were granted legal custody of our two grandsons (then 2 and 3.) I've since forgotten what quiet means.  When I'm not chasing the little guys, I write, read, garden, enjoy my friends and spend far too much time on the 'Net.

You can read about raising my grandchildren at Kinship Parenting.
